Been long hauling since 2020. I’ve been relatively ok except for the crushing headaches, fatigue and overall poisoned feeling in the body( difficult to explain) I need a sympathetic ear and se advice. I am a nurse and I have been able to go back to full time work this, while it’s hard and I am often behind in paperwork I manage to do the bare minimum. I am definitely not as mentally sharp, organized and efficient as I once was and it shows. So I have been feeling lead to move the last two years hopefully living in a beautiful place surrounded by nature, trees and natural body of water and a slower paced environment as i believe it would be healing to my overtaxed neurological system. Currently I live and work in Vegas and let me say, in general this is not a place you want to be when you don’t feel well. Not only does the healthcare system suck if is very disorganized, it’s too crowed and fast paced for me now. So I have been working on moving to Reno/ Lake Tahoe area. I was in luck when I found a contract position that was going to pay enough money for me to only work limited hours. I submitted my job application, called the next day interviewed and was hired. They just had nurses leave and the are in dire need. Basically I would be doing wound care in rural areas. I am advanced practice nurse so I would be making the shots, ordering Home health debriding the wounds, and prescribing the treatment plan and do wound grafts. Now I do have experience with wound care except the grafting part which they told me they would train me on. When I spoke with the owner of the company I told her my situation I was in that I still needed to find a place up north, move and tie loose ends at my current job. We just had a several workers leave and I told her I wanted to give them ample time to found coverage. So this company has been asking me to see patients up there at least once a week in addition to remote work on Wednesday I originally agreed but it has become to taxing on my body especially with still working full time in Vegas. I had a major relapse of my fatigue this week, was supposed to fly out Saturday morning see patients and fly back. This morning I woke with fatigue, sore throat and headache and generalized feeling of malaise. No Fever. I thought to myself, there is no way I can manage the travel and drive to these rural areas far away and see patients( two which were new) at the time I agreed because I was feeling ok and they bought my ticket but it’s obvious I still can’t push my body that much. I sent them an email telling them I wasn’t well and let’s just say it was not accepted well. They were in a state of panic( understandably) because they have no provider for these patients. I know my body needed the rest but I feel so incredibly guilty. This is also the second time I called off but first time I was just doing remote visits. Another concerning thing is when I flew down there there first time I barely had the right equipment to do my job. I was told there was wound care supplies in the office but there was not enough to do a good job. I did did the best which what I had and sent her an email regarding the supplies I needed. When they asked me to work this weekend I asked them if they ordered the right supplies to which she responded I needed to ask someone else( one of her partners) when I asked him he said that everything I needed was there that I just had ‘to Dig’ through the Boxes and look for it. To which I told him Last time I was there I looked thoroughly and did not find what I needed to provide the right care. He just seemed to shrug it off like it was no big deal, gave me my office key and swore up and down the supplies were in there which they weren’t . Also another concerning thing is when I flew out there last time I had to get my own rental car( it was very expensive) and when I emailed my manager about reimbursement they ignored my email. So far this company seems very unorganized and not interested in my well being not only as human being, but as clinician. I just don’t know what to do. This is my only position and I will moving there in less than a month so I need the income but to me they seem extremely unreasonable. How would handle this situation? I feel terrible And guilty because they patients are abandoned today and one really needed to be seen but I just couldn’t do it. I am Feeling better this evening after sleeping 😴 her 12 hours but clearly this isn’t sustainable. Anyone a similar situation? Also any other health care workers that can shed some light? I am needing some guidance on what my next step should be? I am terrible at communicating my needs mainly because people look At me and think I am perfectly healthy. Another side effect of COVID too timid to speak my mind because I am afraid of being gas lit as I have been in the past from another employer who fired me.

The World Government will wipe out an island for researching the Void Century this was the fate of Ohara. Nothing overtly points to Lulusia having anything to do with the Void Century.

I think a big clue to this mystery is God Valley. It seems like Lulusia shared the same fate as God Valley which also vanished. God Valley was attacked by Rocks whose goal was to become the King of the World.

According to Doflamingo Mary Geoise's national treasure can be used to take over the world. I believe it is Uranus and that God Valley was the original location it was stored. I think Rocks attacked God Valley to retrieve Uranus but failed. And God Valley was destroyed to keep Uranus a secret. I think Lulusia has the Poneglyph which says where to find Uranus.

It's unknown what exactly York told the Gorosei about Vegapunk's research. But after finding out that Oharan archaeologists research survived I think Im decided to wipe out all information that can lead to Uranus being discovered. But I think the World Government was too late.

Dr. Black Beard is a resident of Lulusia who was attacked by Ace after he mistook him for Teach. He seems like a throw away character but I think there is more to him. I believe he is a dangerous pirate who went to Lulusia to find Uranus and contributed greatly to its suffering.

I think Kurotsuru is the CP-9 agent who partnered with Who's-Who to guard the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Obviously Kurotsuru is bigger but I think the designs do look similar. The shape of the face, goatee, glasses and seemingly curly hair.

It was stated that Who's-Who was the only CP-9 agent to escape imprisonment. I think he used the battle and as an opportunity to fake his death in order to leave Cipher Pol.

I think he is the pirate that Shanks warned the Gorosei about. I thought it was reminiscent of the conversation he had with Whitebeard about Teach. I think he was giving a warning about Black Beard again. His crew did fight this CP-9 agent so he could recognize him. I think he was telling Gorosei that one of their agents was up to something nefarious and more dangerous then he seemed.

Seki seems like he is inspired by Dracula. Stussy who is Vegapunk's ally and creation has vampire like abilities. I don't if know if it's suppose to hint a connection with Vegapunk.

He impoverished his own people by forcing them to pay tributes. In SBS vol. 94 Oda revealed that King Seki was a new ruler and that Lulusia was peaceful before his rule. We actually saw so in Ace's cover story "Ace's Great Blackbeard Search" when he visited the island. Because of this I think that King Seki came to power with the help of Kurotsuru.

When Seki is imprisoned a citizen of Lulusia is urging him to confess his crimes. I think those crimes were killing the previous king to steal his throne.

In Ace's cover story a naval reconnaissance ship from marine base G-2 (which is in close proximity to Lulusia) is set on fire by pirates. Ace steals the top secret info and it turns out to be about Blackbeard, which I think is important. I believe Kurotsuru was behind this because he mistakenly believed the intel was about him.

I also think Kurotsuru compromised G-2 because something is off about the marines stationed there. Assuming they escorted the Lulusian royal family to Levely they failed to prevent Princess Komane's kidnapping by pirates that didn't seem that strong. Which Sakazuki admonished.

According to Pinkbeard the marine ship they left to protect Lulusia was only for show.

Lulusia was part of the Eight-Nation Revolution even though it was so close to a marine base. Supposedly King Seki took all of his strongest men and still probably had a marine escort when returning home but he was somehow defeated and captured. The Lulusian citizens needed the help of the Revolutionary Commanders to beat the Pinkbeard Pirates.

9 year old Taj Narbonne was a fourth-grade student at Fall Brook Elementary School and is described as an intelligent, well-mannered and soft-spoken child who was mature for his age. At the time of his disappearance Taj resided with his mother, Annette Dean, and his stepfather, Clarence Dean, at an apartment in Leominster, Massachusetts in 1981. He disappeared from his bed in the middle of the night, taking his slippers with him but no other clothes. He has never been heard from again.
Taj had recently returned home from visiting with his grandparents. The night before he disappeared, Clarence arrived at home around 11:30 p.m. He and Annette had a beer together and went to bed at about midnight. She woke up at 1:30 a.m. and realized she was alone in the bed, and got up to look for Clarence. She accidentally knocked over some bottles and then told Clarence he'd better go to Taj's room in case he was frightened by the noise. Annette then returned to bed. When she woke up the next morning, Taj was nowhere to be found.
On March 31, 1981, Annette called her mother, Eunice Narbonne, at approximately 8:00 a.m. to report that she could not find Taj. She stated his slippers were also missing, but the clothes she'd laid out for him to wear were still there, and she found a handwritten note reading: “I'm going away because I don't want to live here anymore. I don't have to listen to anybody anymore." A search of the area produced no clues as to his whereabouts. Taj’s grandmother have said they do not believe their grandson left home voluntarily because he was terrified of the dark and was not wearing socks or shoes at the time he vanished. The temperature that morning hovered around freezing.
Annette initially believed that her son left of his own accord to get away from his stepfather, Clarence. However, Taj was never located and at nine, it is unlikely that he had the capabilities to disappear without a trace. Taj’s grandmother stated that Taj called her the evening of his disappearance and asked her to come and get him, saying he was afraid. She told him to go to sleep.
Taj’s mother, Annette, who was nine months pregnant at the time, told authorities that Taj was terrified of Clarence and did not want to live with him, and he often lived apart from his family as a result. Taj's grandparents stated Clarence detested Taj, and suggested racial issues were to blame; since Clarence is African-American.
Taj himself had told his teacher and his best friend that he was being abused at home. He also saw the school guidance counselor on a regular basis to talk about his problems. Annette was frightened of Clarence's temper and planned to leave him and take Taj and her other child, age one, with her. She delayed her departure, however, due to her pregnancy.
Police procedures involving missing children were much different in 1981. It was about a week after Taj's disappearance when it was publicized. His family placed advertisements in several newspapers and hired a private investigator to assist with the search, but none of the leads went anywhere.
In 1982, Clarence was sentenced to six years in prison for kidnapping and stabbing his estranged wife. He and Annette divorced in 1983. She went into hiding with her children for a time after Clarence was released from prison.
Clarence suffers from mental illness and is now a resident in Bridgewater State Hospital. Annette has since remarried and moved to New York; she now goes by the name Annette Long.
Authorities searched a barn in Leominster in June 1989, over eight years after Taj disappeared. The barn was less than one mile from his family's residence. Investigators stated that they searched for his remains, but no evidence was located.
Taj’s case remains unsolved and continues to be classified as a non-family abduction.

Disclaimer: Really long rant – not looking for sympathy, just have no one to tell this to and am frustrated because another trans clinic I was working at closed down
Definitely over simplifying some things but I’m walking home after a 14 hour day at work and brain is fried

New trans MD who had aspirations of opening my own trans clinic all throughout medical school, long time lurker of this sub
However, working in clinics providing gender affirming care has made those dreams seem more and more unattainable
One of the clinics I worked at closed because they weren’t able to sufficiently cover costs by specializing in gender affirming care. We submit a billing request for each visit to the government, but spending time in the patient encounter is only one requirement before we might be paid (3-6 months later bc “administrative delay”, sometimes it’s rejected and we have to resubmit and wait another 3-6 months); the fee is also supposed to cover any time spent sending/reviewing/calling patients about blood tests, writing/answering questions from pharmacists for prescriptions, writing/sending notes/responding to consultants (surgery or endo), reviewing the patients chart before hand to check for medical interactions with HRT that require a different approach, ordering/supplying/administering blocker injections, properly documenting the patient encounter according to the provincial medical college guidelines, answering questions that come in by phone, and actually compiling/proving/sending a request to the government that we saw the patient and would like to paid.
As all of you unfortunately know, it can be so difficult to even access gender affirming care in the first place – so after such a long wait time, when patients finally see us, the last thing we want to do is rush the appointment on such an important matter. So typically, the clinics I’ve been in allocate 30 minutes for the first appointment, to allow time for any and all questions about medication options/side effect profiles/costs/insurance coverage, referral logistics and wait times, preventative health care measures, screening and monitoring, fertility preservation, connecting patients to relevant allied health providers, providing mental health support, and any other questions or concerns they have. Then at the end of the day, we recollect every conversation we had throughout and document it in the electronic medical record, which usually takes 10-15 minutes per patient. Then we start spending time reviewing patient lab results, writing and sending notes to consultants, responding to questions from consultants and pharmacists, and reviewing the patients charts for the next day.
I didn’t do medicine for the money but after spending over 10 years of school, I want to make sure I can chip away at my debt, be able to start a family, and afford a place to live
I graduated with $112k of debt (Ontario has the highest medical school tuitions in Canada) and that’s despite working part time throughout medical school 💀 after my income is taxed by almost half (not complaining just reality), my medical license costs $1725 a year, mandatory registration with the provincial medical association costs $2000 a year, mandatory registration with the federal family doctors association costs $1062 a year, mandatory liability coverage costs $2160 a year, disability insurance and critical illness Insurance costs $6800 a year, electronic medical record software costs $4200 a year, billing software costs $3000 a year, and then I pay off rent/travel/food/utilities and anything left I can try to chip away at my growing debt with the interest rates we have. I’m haven’t even begun to think about starting my TFSA or RRSP, and doctors aren’t provided any sort of retirement plan
Family doctors have to pay out of pocket for overhead expenses, for the monthly rent of their office, hydro/wateheating/internet, salaries of a full-time secretary and/or nurse etc - sure, we can create a corporation to try and offset the tax burden, but that is only effective when your gross revenue is high enough - something that’s often impossible as a family doctor providing longitudinal comprehensive care in a fee for service model
But if I work in a rural emergency department, or do in patient hospital work, or work in a long term care home - basically anything that isn’t the traditional longitudinal family doctor practice (let alone a clinic specializing in gender affirming care), I avoid almost all the overhead costs and can receive 50% more.
Maybe in a decade when I have enough financial security to pay off my debt, start a family, get my first house, and stop driving a broken down car will I try to open a trans clinic without needing worry about how to keep the costs covered and my own family fed
Just wanted to rant and vent into a void – goes to show how little the government values access to and provision of gender diverse care. Some of what I wrote probably doesn’t make sense because of my fried brain

So I work at a haunted attraction in upstate New York called the Field of Horror,and last season we had one single Michael Myers roaming actor that would walk our midway. The guy was we wearing a Halloween kills mask I believe and he would carry a Bluetooth speaker and play the then song as he would scare. He was damn good apparently and was able to miniver the crowd in such a way that he was seemingly everywhere at once. The owners were so impressed that it started some kind of inside joke between them and my boss.so the week before the last weekend of the run,my boss posts in our cast Facebook group, asking for if anyone has jumpsuits and MM masks to bring them to the haunt. During the corse of the last night all the tallest actors, parking attendants, and the original Michael along with everyone who brought their own costumes from home,quietly yet quickly replaced all our normal timing monsters with a small army of Michaels! They apparently swarmed and then fallowed the owners conga line style thru each of the houses , I only saw them briefly as I’m a house scare actor so my interactions are limited to whoever stumbles into my room, but it was one hell of sight as a gaggle of Michael Myers of all shapes and sizes are just tailgating the owners. Now at my haunt we have a house of the night award, and each night all the houses (and the roamers) are able to get the chance to take the award home for the night. That night the Michael Myerses won the award, and unfortunately we never were filled in On the details of the inside joke

All my life people have fucked me over ever since I was young in school I would try to be at my best behavior and it was not enough I would talk too much or not work hard enough at home I would miss behave because all I wanted to do was play with my toys in a way that my mom didn’t I was a bad kid because my sisters always wanted me to so shit for her and because she got everything and I got mad when I was old enough to actually have relationships with friends I was weird because I didn’t listen to rap or got expensive bullshit because I didn’t have a phone until I was 11 I was weird soon enough we moved to middle school and the only friends I did have left like in less than a month completely left me all the other students called me fat made fun of me said I was annoying gross ugly everything when I moved to Florida (from New York) the son of a fucking cunt that my mother married in order for them to get their lives together not for love or some other kind of bullshit that bitch lied about everything he promised he never took care of us he never tried to do anything to get his life together and just dragged us down with him by some miracle I atleast got to meet one of his friends kid his name was Xavier (and yes that was his real name because there are a lot of Xaviers in this world) we got to like each other one day when he was sleeping over which was really weird because I was him once ever 3-4 months he said I love you and than gave me a fake phone number and I never saw him again my mom was always mad at me for the smallest things at this time I was also into taking really shitty advice and I would fallow that bullshit about woman empowerment and I would go on Omegle and get naked with guys who were anywhere from 13-30 keep in mind I’m 12 at this time a was a hoe at the age of twelve because of pop culture and because I though that shit was empowering when I moved back to New York (still in love with Xavier) I tried to get a boyfriend and guess when he peer pressured me into sucking his dick in the staircase of the school welp someone filmed it now I’m the Mia khalifa of my school nice tried to kill myself in still here did not work was sent to a hospital spent a week there moved to a new school life still sucks because everyone know I’m that one girl that got caught sucking dick in the staircase how nice I fail the school year because I don’t go to school because I take take all the bullying I move to the Dominican Republic with my dad surprise surprise my life still fucking sucks. Coulson finally talks with someone from this world. This ones a bit longer sorry for the delay I hit a bit of writers block. This ones more goal and talking orientated so I hope that helps vary things up. Anyway writing this so far has been a lot of fun hope everyone enjoys and yes I wanna do more to tie this into the main James storyline but I'm super not comfortable with doing that without full communication with pepper so for now I'm keep this far away. and as always the more feedback the better.

It had been 2 weeks since the spring was discovered. In that time the base was improved and more gear set up. A pump was set up at the spring filling tanks near the base, the portal was put on an automatic timer to drain the tanks and so far it was working perfectly. Coulson spent most of his time now wandering the area and finding stuff to send back to R&D for study. Foreman had been surprisingly helpful in explaining the current situation in the world along with relaying any new info the government had gotten.
Near the base he had also set up a 20 ft. tower that helped extend the radio range from the tear and cameras on it helped secure the base and record events. Apparently at one point it even recorded dragons flying by of all different colors from yellow to pink and even a black one with a furry neck.
His suit even got some upgrades, most notably a new covering that went under the motors and hydraulics like his clothes but completely covered him and even came with a spacesuit- like helmet. Foreman had said it would help against heat and cold but would also work as CBRN gear if it came down to it. None of that was important right now today was important because he had a special call. It had been over 2 weeks now since Coulson was able to contact his daughter. He knew she was safe after all that was the big insurance the company had to keep Coulson doing what they wanted. Finally today was the day that they would allow them to get into contact with each other. It made sense for them as they needed his morale to be high for his next mission. Foreman cut on the comms “Morning Enforcer todays the day and we have someone just about to leave for school who wants to talk to you. You have a few minutes for the connection so be quick.” After a few seconds he heard breathing then the voice of a young girl. “Hey papa you there?” A smile grew on Coulson's face half in relief to finally hear his daughter again. “I'm here sweetie it's good to hear from you, they said you're heading to school?” He heard her fumble around with the phone before responding. “Yea I have a new nanny now her name is Katie she's nice, she's driving me there. When can you come home?” Healing her said that hurt but he didn't want to lie. “I, I don't know if I'm going to be back home soon, it may be a while.” He winced a bit waiting for the response. “Alright, can we watch a movie when you're back?” He smiled again, giggling. “Of course.” There was a beep signaling the time was almost up. “Sweetie, I gotta go be safe and do what the people in suits tell you to do ok?” “Okay Papa bye.” The comm went silent as the communication was cut. It was good to know she was safe at least. As if to ruin the moment of course Foreman cut in. “Enforcer your job today is more or less unknown, I've given you what information we have on the world the past week. You are due for an expedition to find another point where we can gather resources to send through the portal. This mission is more or less up to you as we will lose contact but do not return empty handed. Good luck Enforcer Foreman out.” Coulson had gotten the news that this was due to happen soon and he estimated it was today. Well guess the giant is never satisfied and the M.I.C. wouldn't be with just the water. The sad truth is that Coulson had absolutely no clue what to mine or what this world even had. He needed local help, luckily he knew just the place to go, when setting up the tower he noticed a nearby village built into the side of a nearby mountain. With no other idea of where to begin he set off hiking towards the village on a 2 day trip.

The trip was mostly uneventful, Coulson had brought spare hydrogen cells and plenty of food or water so he never had to stop for long except for sleep. The most worrying thing was he still did not have a dedicated weapon and while the baton worked for nonlethal encounters and would probably do well against a standard human it proved ineffective against larger creatures.
Eventually he arrived and in the distance he saw a small town, each building was higher then next as it winded up the side of the mountain's various holes dug into the side down into mines. Rock was used heavily throughout the towns construction being a part of every building, a few buildings had smoke rise from them presumably being smelters or blacksmiths. Around the side was a small wall leading to a gate in the front.
As he approached he decided it would be best just in case to put his helmet on while heading towards the gate making sure he had no weapons showing. At the front 2 men sat and chatted, both wearing armor one was a dwarf with orange hair and the other a human with short black hair as they laughed and joked before noticing Coulson. “Hold there stranger, what kind of armor is that?” The human spoke holding a spear and gesturing to Coulson’s suit. “Some kind of Arbalestier maybe?” The dwarf held a surprisingly large warhammer of sorts and spoke back to the human guard.” “I'm just a miner from a camp up north. I came here to trade that's all.” Coulson shifted a bit, These guys didn't seem to be too hard of a fight if it came to it but that would be wasteful and dangerous considering he had no clue how strong they really were. Besides he had never been in a REAL fight in ages back on earth he just did fake muggings or assassinations there was never really any brawling. The human guard seems to lower his spear a bit signaling Coulson to step closer. “You said you're a miner? What kind of mining suit is that then?” That was a fair point and Coulson did not have an easy answer ready. He had to come up with something quickly.
“I'm an Arbalest. I help mine sometimes.” Man he hoped that made sense he had NO clue what an Arbalest was but if his suit looked like one hopefully this would pass. The guard sighed and looked at the dwarf before looking back. “Alright fine but do anything funny and we will see how that suit sells.” They both moved over, opening the gate and guiding him in. “Over there is the tavern, behind that's the mine and the inn is part of the tavern.” Coulson looked around at the mining town. It was not exactly small but he estimated a population of a few hundred. The best place to start was probably the tavern, at least according to his information on fantasy books, which was frankly all he had to go off of in this situation. “Thank you, I'll try not to cause a ruckus.” The two guards turned back to their guarding spots as Coulson went inside the tavern.
Inside was right out of a D&D game with an elf behind the bar filling a tankard, a duo of off duty guards chatting and telling jokes, in the back a table of four dwarves and across from them three orcs.
The room went a bit quiet as everyone stopped eyeing Coulson. The guards did not seem to care about going back to drinking and joking. The orcs eyed before going back to chatting as the dwarves laughed one of them halloring Coulson over. “What the hell kind of armor is that boy? What are you trying to protect yourself from, rain!?”
The dwarves laughed heartily before Coulson interjected. “Not so wrong, I take it you're the gruff miners of this town?” “Aye that we are boy, what's your business in town?” One of the dwarves in the back said leaning over his drink. “Just a fellow miner trying to see what's good for mining in the area. I'm… new to the mining business.” That wasn't entirely true but he hoped it would yield the results he was looking for.
“Well if you mean in these mines not much I'm afraid. You're looking at the deep mining expedition crew and we haven't found squat, news is there gonna close up the mine soon apparently.” There was opportunity here but if this town is out of mining deposits it could mean the ones in the area are not that big.
There was movement from behind him as one of the orcs spoke up “If you lazy damn dwarfs would get off your drunk asses and find some damn ore we wouldn't have to close the mine!” Another of the dwarves was quick to respond. “There isn't any damn ore down there green skin” Suddenly a table was shoved as an orc stood up and moved to the dwarves table grabbing the one that called him a greenskins chair and throwing him out of it. “The hell did you just call me shorty.” This was getting ruff and he knew when a fight was brewing. “Hey come on guys, let's just calm down.” That, was not the correct line of words to use in this situation and now he was being tossed into a bar. “Shut up ya damn coward.” Alright screw it time for the fun approach. Coulson grabbed the orc's shoulder with his left hand and shoved the baton into his back, immediately the orc's muscles clenched as he fell to the ground. Huh more bark than bite apparently. He savored the win just to feel a fist knock him onto the floor from the other ogre. “Fuck that hurt. Anyway can we-?” He was cut off as the Orc put a boot on his chest one of the dwarves coming to help but quickly getting punches falling to the wall the wind knocked out of him. Coulson grunted and grabbed the Orcs leg, the hydraulics activating as he shoved his leg up and back causing him to fall backwards. Just as he tried to pull his head up to get back up Coulson lifted his exosuit reinforced leg up over his head slamming it down, knocking him out. “Everyone okay?” Coulson asked, shaking himself off and getting up. “Aye lad were alright.” Coulson moved up checking on the Orc. “Oh good, just a concussion he will be fine.” Coulson sat back down on the bar nursing his wounds.

“I don't follow what's liquid elemental obsidian?” Coulson looked around at the dwarves as he sipped his drink. “It's more of a theory,” Urist said. “Apparently due to its properties if you go down deep enough to the point where it's pretty much unlivable and thus un-mineable, the pressure and heat means elemental obsidian is found at a liquid state. But since it's so far down no ones found it yet, let alone mined.” Coulsons eyes almost glew as he hatched a plan, if he could hire these dwarves to help mine and run the mining gear it would save him a ton of effort. “My equipment is from a different country. I could probably use it to see if it exists, and if it does work out a way to mine it if you wanna work for me.” Some of the dwarves laughed but Urist looked at him trying to see if he was joking. “You're serious aren't ya? Well damn you beat those orcs for us and we are about to be out of a job anyway. Screw it, I'm in.” The other dwarfs cheered in agreement and not long after Coulson and the 4 dwarves left the town on a trip home.

On March 25, 1911, Frances Perkins was visiting with a friend who lived near Washington Square in New York City when they heard fire engines and screams. They rushed out to the street to see what the trouble was. A fire had broken out in a garment factory on the upper floors of a building on Washington Square, and the blaze ripped through the lint in the air. The only way out was down the elevator, which had been abandoned at the base of its shaft, or through an exit to the roof. But the factory owner had locked the roof exit that day because, he later testified, he was worried some of his workers might steal some of the blouses they were making.
“The people had just begun to jump when we got there,” Perkins later recalled. “They had been holding until that time, standing in the windowsills, being crowded by others behind them, the fire pressing closer and closer, the smoke closer and closer. Finally the men were trying to get out this thing that the firemen carry with them, a net to catch people if they do jump, the[y] were trying to get that out and they couldn’t wait any longer. They began to jump. The…weight of the bodies was so great, at the speed at which they were traveling that they broke through the net. Every one of them was killed, everybody who jumped was killed. It was a horrifying spectacle.”
By the time the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was out, 147 young people were dead, either from their fall from the factory windows or from smoke inhalation.
Perkins had few illusions about industrial America: she had worked in a settlement house in an impoverished immigrant neighborhood in Chicago and was the head of the New York office of the National Consumers League, urging consumers to use their buying power to demand better conditions and wages for workers. But even she was shocked by the scene she witnessed on March 25.
By the next day, New Yorkers were gathering to talk about what had happened on their watch. “I can't begin to tell you how disturbed the people were everywhere,” Perkins said. “It was as though we had all done something wrong. It shouldn't have been. We were sorry…. We didn't want it that way. We hadn’t intended to have 147 girls and boys killed in a factory. It was a terrible thing for the people of the City of New York and the State of New York to face.”
The Democratic majority leader in the New York legislature, Al Smith—who would a few years later go on to four terms as New York governor and become the Democratic presidential nominee in 1928—went to visit the families of the dead to express his sympathy and his grief. “It was a human, decent, natural thing to do,” Perkins said, “and it was a sight he never forgot. It burned it into his mind. He also got to the morgue, I remember, at just the time when the survivors were being allowed to sort out the dead and see who was theirs and who could be recognized. He went along with a number of others to the morgue to support and help, you know, the old father or the sorrowing sister, do her terrible picking out.”
“This was the kind of shock that we all had,” Perkins remembered.
The next Sunday, concerned New Yorkers met at the Metropolitan Opera House with the conviction that “something must be done. We've got to turn this into some kind of victory, some kind of constructive action….” One man contributed $25,000 to fund citizens’ action to “make sure that this kind of thing can never happen again.”
The gathering appointed a committee, which asked the legislature to create a bipartisan commission to figure out how to improve fire safety in factories. For four years, Frances Perkins was their chief investigator.
She later explained that although their mission was to stop factory fires, “we went on and kept expanding the function of the commission 'till it came to be the report on sanitary conditions and to provide for their removal and to report all kinds of unsafe conditions and then to report all kinds of human conditions that were unfavorable to the employees, including long hours, including low wages, including the labor of children, including the overwork of women, including homework put out by the factories to be taken home by the women. It included almost everything you could think of that had been in agitation for years. We were authorized to investigate and report and recommend action on all these subjects.”
And they did. Al Smith was the speaker of the house when they published their report, and soon would become governor. Much of what the commission recommended became law.
Perkins later mused that perhaps the new legislation to protect workers had in some way paid the debt society owed to the young people who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire. “The extent to which this legislation in New York marked a change in American political attitudes and policies toward social responsibility can scarcely be overrated,” she said. “It was, I am convinced, a turning point.”
But she was not done. In 1919, over the fervent objections of men, Governor Smith appointed Perkins to the New York State Industrial Commission to help weed out the corruption that was weakening the new laws. She continued to be one of his closest advisers on labor issues. In 1929, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt replaced Smith as New York governor, he appointed Perkins to oversee the state’s labor department as the Depression worsened. When President Herbert Hoover claimed that unemployment was ending, Perkins made national news when she repeatedly called him out with figures proving the opposite and said his “misleading statements” were “cruel and irresponsible.” She began to work with leaders from other states to figure out how to protect workers and promote employment by working together.
In 1933, after the people had rejected Hoover’s plan to let the Depression burn itself out, President-elect Roosevelt asked Perkins to serve as Secretary of Labor in his administration. She accepted only on the condition that he back her goals: unemployment insurance, health insurance, old-age insurance, a 40-hour work week, a minimum wage, and abolition of child labor. She later recalled: “I remember he looked so startled, and he said, ‘Well, do you think it can be done?’”
She promised to find out.
Once in office, Perkins was a driving force behind the administration’s massive investment in public works projects to get people back to work. She urged the government to spend $3.3 billion on schools, roads, housing, and post offices. Those projects employed more than a million people in 1934.
In 1935, FDR signed the Social Security Act, providing ordinary Americans with unemployment insurance; aid to homeless, dependent, and neglected children; funds to promote maternal and child welfare; and public health services.
In 1938, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, which established a minimum wage and maximum hours. It banned child labor.
Frances Perkins, and all those who worked with her, transformed the horror of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire into the heart of our nation’s basic social safety net.
“There is always a large horizon…. There is much to be done,” Perkins said. “It is up to you to contribute some small part to a program of human betterment for all time.”
